In this case, the boatman you're both questioning is the character of Captain Tanner. He was portrayed by Clive Russell, who appears to be quite a busy actor, judging by his credits on the afore-mentioned site. I don't know about you, but I'd love to see him in the sequel--his banter with the other actors was brilliant.

Cheers!A. I let kids sneak ice cream and all that jazz, but when it comes to their safety, sometimes I'm more of a freak about it than their parents.

I was at the library the other day and this elderly German woman who works there was walking around with a little 3 year old boy named Robby attached to her finger, and they were looking for his mommy. I joined the search, and after they called for "Robby's caregiver or mother to the front please", his uncle came up. He was 25 at best, and had NO idea he was gone. For a HALF HOUR!! 30 minutes! And when the German woman and another librarian and I were taking turns ripping him a new one, he didn't even look up. He was texting on his phone. I was repulsed.

One thing I've noticed after being a nanny, is that I can do a better job than most parents I know, and I'm only 21. It's not my place to judge other peoples parenting skills, but a lot of parents just...don't know what the hell they're doing.

I give you props for saying something. It kills me when people allow stuff to happen and they just bite their tongues because they want to be "appropriate" and not raise eyebrows or draw attention to themselves. Way to go, hopefully you gave that other "mom" some food for thought!

:)

And as you've heard many a time, you're an easy read. You might also find this article from The Economist magazine interesting:
http://www.economist.com/science/displaystory.cfm?story_id=13489714

It deals with the very subject you describe. I found almost every one of the comments as enlightening as the article itself. It's a topic more parents have experience with than I imagined, and one that all parents should be aware of. For most parents (though, sadly, not all) part of raising children is teaching them to recognize and accept the many kinds of difference around them. Children can be cruel, but only if the adults in their lives allow them to remain so do we do our societies a disservice by harming the individuals within them.

Thank you for your comments!A. Many kids these days are "twice exceptional" - those who think outside the box but are also pegged with various learning differences because of their unconventional thought. And so, many of these 2E kids are completely left behind because they are bored in some subjects and require reinforcement in other subjects -- eek!

Anyway - I'm the one who took the photo of your girls w/ Bill Nye -- I'm about to put up photos at Flickr (I'm "Karianna") - but you can also email me at karianna at karianna dot us (yes .us) and I'd be happy to send you a bigger photo than what you can grab on Flickr.Kariannahttp://www.kariannaspectrum.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8492461548104588320.post-12444315671108579472009-04-26T13:57:00.000-07:002009-04-26T13:57:00.000-07:00Angela, you make us (students) feel very inspired....Angela, you make us (students) feel very inspired. Feeling very happy of having you as a professor. I just recently learned that my carpool had decided to drop his class, which means that I will be traveling by public transportation to school a total time of three hours in order to take a 50 min class :P But since it is your class, it is totally worth it. :)chofahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00590396001489359685noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8492461548104588320.post-69153302825312853332009-04-12T23:59:00.001-07:002009-04-12T23:59:00.001-07:00From interviews I've heard, I understand that Mr. ...From interviews I've heard, I understand that Mr. Downey gets to know every word of a script backward, forward, and inside out, until he can deliver those words as though they were shaped in his head at the very moment someone calls, "Action..." An admirable trait for an actor, to be sure. Yet he can, at times, deliver voice-over lines with a rapidity and downward-ranging tone that makes them hard to follow, depending on the sort of character he's portraying (Harry Lockhart from Shane Black's "Kiss, Kiss, Bang, Bang", for example). Of course, Harry spends most of the movie ranging emotionally from nervous to completely freaked out, so it fits his personality. In the Soloist, Downey's vocals during voice-overs are low and intimate, yet slow enough to absorb each of Steve Lopez's words. When you're able to compare the book and the movie, this will make more sense. Try reading some of Lopez's articles from his website, linked to his name in the text of my original post.

Definitely go see the movie. As a fan, you won't be disappointed. Pay attention to the messages--there are many and all of them are worth listening to. If you love Los Angeles, this film may be fuel for that fire, or may dowse it, depending on how willing you are to embrace its dirty realities. You sound rather like the stoking type. *grin*

All the best--and I hope you can find a Wing Chun school near you. It's a great martial art.

All The Best, A.O.A. I did indeed love the movie. I'd highly recommend that you read the book, as well. I hadn't read it when I saw the film, but even just a few chapters in, I was astounded to discover how well Susannah Grant crafted the script, and Joe Wright directed it, to include a myriad of details and scenes that fit the original story. No script can exactly match a book--there just isn't enough time in that 2-hour window to cram it all in--but if the screenwriter and filmmaker can give the audience a sense of that same imagery, I'd consider it a successful project. The book and the movie aren't exactly the same, and that's okay. A quarter of the way through the book, I'm as hooked as I was on the film. Both storylines are well-constructed. Everything builds and takes time to reveal, but it's all there. Wait for it.

(cont.)A. I do have a question... did you like the movie? I could not quite tell from what you wrote. I know you were not writing a review but I am curious. I have been looking forward to it for a long time. I am a long time Downey fan. I even visited the Wing Chun studio once on a vacation just to see where Mr.Downey spent such an important part of his time. If I lived closer I would enroll too but live too far away. I also grew up in LA and have a love for this city that does not make a lot of sense. I love the old parts of the city that are mostly gone now. Anyway.. I do thank you. Really enjoyed your words. Take care..Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
